General Idea's Going Thru the Motions de General Idea

Ce document est uniquement disponible en anglais :
«The General Idea show which is now on view at Galerie Optica is called «Going Thru the Motions». It consists of a series of photographs and drawings accompanied by explanatory texts and one piece of sculpture. These all document a project that has preoccupied the group since its founding in 1968. The theme is autobiographical, introspective and speculative about the future of art, a future that General Idea suggests, will see 'high' art shed its aristocratic mantle and become a popular myth, a general idea as impersonal and readily available as General Foods or General Motors. [...] Everything the group does – with considerable humour and more than a touch of loathing – contributes to the definition and refinement of this art-for-all-consumers which will be enshrined in the General Idea Pavilion to be completed in 1984 and inaugurated with a 'Deca-Dance'. Miss General Idea will then be chosen : She will personify the new artist who is to be pure personality, all super-ego without an id. This new artist will no longer ‘create’ but go through the motions dictated by the collective will. The ‘making of art’ will be replaced by ‘being an artist’ as art’s sole preoccupation and, to put it into one of General Idea’s favourite nutshells, content and context will become inseparable.»
