«To discuss «Photographs of Women by Women» as an ‘art show’ would be to ignore its intent as a cultural statement. It is more involved with investigating the role that images play in creating the archetypes and models with which we live than it is with presenting a series of formally interesting pictures.

The plastic world provided by the media dominates many imaginations : a universe peopled by Garbos and Dietrichs seems infinitely preferable to one filled with housewives in hair curlers. In a sense, the show put together by the Women’s Photography Workshop is an iconoclastic act. It is an attempt to destroy an inherited set of stereotypes and to replace them with images taken from a more mundane and accessible reality.

Advertising and fashion photography have created an image of woman that is a theatrical product – a spectacle which has nothing to do with the lives that people lead. This show is a tentative step towards the sort of self-definition that is necessary for any kind of personal liberation. It is an important example of a group of people consciously trying to define their own image in a society, and a rejection of impossible comparisons is an important part of that attempt. Perhaps it will never be possible for the individual to have complete freedom to fashion his or her own life, but certainly it is possible to have a society which allows greater flexibility and variation. Since the group that edited this show intends to continue working together, concentrating their activities around the Baldwin Street Gallery in Toronto, perhaps they will take future opportunities to go even further in exploring this concept of visual self-evaluation.»
