David Ball - Oliver Walker
OPTICA, centre d’art contemporain is organizing six dinner parties on April 15,16,17,20,21 and 22 as part of British artists Dave Ball and Oliver Walker's Dinner Party project. It is a participatory live art project, which is part of the exhibition Polyphonies presented at OPTICA this spring.
We are looking for individuals from cultural, professional, community backgrounds and different generational groups that are not necessarily related to the art world. If this appeals to you, contact us!
It works like this: eight guests are invited to a dinner party; four sit at the dinner table and four sit in separate rooms. Each person sitting at the table wears an earphone, into which speaks one of the 'booth guests', sitting alone in another room. Each of the four 'booth guests' can see what happens at the dinner table through a video link. In effect, the four 'booth guests' talk to each other through the four 'table guests', who speak their words for them.
What's important about the evening is that no-one has ever seen each other before, so you can't bring a friend. You can however invite a friend to another one at a later date. There is no audience, just the 8 guests and the artists, and it takes place in a small private apartment. The event is not recorded on camera. In order to participate, you need to be available in the evening from 6 PM.
Apart from the unusual setting, the evening will be like any other at a friends for dinner: you'll eat and drink, and hopefully have a nice conversation with someone new. The idea is to find out what happens when people meet for the first time, and how people start to get to know each other.
